ALLEN, PETER
The Cambridge Apostles: The Early Years
As cover, Cambridge University Press. 1979. (ISBN: 9780521218030). Hardcover, 15.2 x 2.9 x 22.8 cm. Condition good clean with dust jacket which has a small tear. ref ZKVQ For more than one hundred and fifty years the Cambridge Apostles have played an influential role in the development of the British intelligentsia. Peter Allen's concern is with the origins and early history of this long-lived coterie and in particular with those years just before the first Reform Bill when the central figures among the Apostles were F. D. Maurice, Arthur Hallam and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He explains the reasons for the club's extraordinary powers of survival and traces the stages of its early development. Using manuscript material, he describes the principal members of the Apostolic group and reveals its inner life through extensive quotation from their correspondence. The early Apostles' role in the formation of the Victorian intelligentsia is exemplified, and they are shown to have made important contributions to the rising movement of liberal intellectualism, a movement which brought about profound changes to Victorian opinion and in society itself. Book Description Peter Allen explores the history of the Cambridge Apostles, a secret club that has played an influential role in the development of the British intelligentsia. He traces the origins and early history particular the years just before the first Reform Bill when the central figures among the Apostles were F. D. Maurice, Arthur Hallam and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. WOOD, BURCH AND
Public Policy in Britain
off white, Wiley-Blackwell. 1983. (ISBN: 9780855205867). Hardcover. Condition good with dust jacket. First published in 1983, this textbook is now published in a completely revised and updated form to take full account of changes in policy-making in the second half of Mrs Thatcher's first decade in power. It provides an original approach to the study and understanding of government in Britain by examining the politics surrounding the acquisition of resources necessary for policy making such as money, land and labour; the division of these between policy programmes and the implementation of these programmes as well as their effects upon the wider state. The approach thus shows not only what government is but also what it does (or chooses not to do), why and with what consequences for the citizen. Used: Acceptable.

BURGESS, ROBERT
The Cave Divers
black, Atlantic Books. 1999. (ISBN: 9781881652113). Paperback, 16.4 x 1.7 x 22.8 cm. Condition good. ref ZKVQ Those who think that exploring underwater caves is too exotic a pastime to be of much interest will change their minds after reading this work by Burgess (Diving Off the Beaten Track), author of books and articles about hunting for sunken treasure. Burgess is among those intrepid pioneers who have made major discoveries in underwater archaeology--finding not only huge caverns that are in effect vast air pockets but also inundated caves whose artifacts give evidence of human habitation, probably during the last ice age. Although chapters on the evolution of diving equipment and underwater cameras will be of scant interest to general readers, there are exciting accounts of expeditions in Europe, the Yucatan peninsula, the Bahamas and especially Florida, rich in significant underwater sites--one of which proved that humans inhabited the Southeast almost 7,000 years earlier than scholars originally thought. Life-threatening dangers abound, including nitrogen buildup in the blood (which causes the bends), disorientation, terrible visibility and entanglement in guide ropes leading from the entry point, which has killed many underwater explorers. Of special poignancy is the author's recounting of the accidental death of a favorite diving companion. This is an interesting mix of adventure and archaeology that probes one of the earth's last frontiers.--Publishers Weekly, September 28, 1998. Good.

BYRNE, ALEX
Disjunctivism: Contemporary Readings (Mit Readers in Contemporary Philosophy)
grey black, MIT Press. 2009. (ISBN: 9780262524902). Paperback, 22.6 x 15.2 x 2.8 cm. Ref ZKVQ Condition good, clean. A central debate in contemporary philosophy of perception concerns the disjunctive theory of perceptual experience. Until the 1960s, philosophers of perception generally assumed that a veridical perception (a perceptual experience that presents the world as it really is) and a subjectively similar hallucination must have significant mental commonalities. Disjunctivists challenge this assumption, contending that the veridical perception and the corresponding hallucination share no mental core. Suppose that while you are looking at a lemon, God suddenly removes it, while keeping your brain activity constant. Although you notice no change, disjunctivists argue that the preremoval and postremoval experiences are radically different. Disjunctivism has gained prominent supporters in recent years, as well as attracting much criticism. This reader collects for the first time in one volume classic texts that define and react to disjunctivism. These include an excerpt from a book by the late J. M. Hinton, who was the first to propose an explicitly disjunctivist position, and papers stating a number of important objections. Contributors: Alex Byrne, Jonathan Dancy, J. M. Hinton, Mark Johnston, Harold Langsam, Heather Logue, M. G. F. Martin, John McDowell, Alan Millar, Howard Robinson, A. D. Smith, Paul Snowdon. "[ Disjunctivism], a reprinting of some of the most important articles on disjunctivism, shows how the history of disjunctivism developed." Tim Crane Times Literary Supplement Alex Byrne is Professor of Philosophy at MIT and the coeditor of Fact and Value: Essays on Ethics and Metaphysics for Judith Jarvis Thomson (2001) and Readings on Color, volumes 1 and 2 (1997), all published by the MIT Press. Heather Logue is a graduate student in Philosophy at MIT. Used: Acceptable.

JENKINS, HENRY
Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide
black, NYU Press. 2008. (ISBN: 9780814742952). Paperback, 15.2 x 2 x 22.9 cm. Condition good, clean. ref ZKVQ Winner of the 2007 Society for Cinema and Media Studies Katherine Singer Kovacs Book Award 2007 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Convergence Culture maps a new territory: where old and new media intersect, where grassroots and corporate media collide, where the power of the media producer and the power of the consumer interact in unpredictable ways. Henry Jenkins, one of America's most respected media analysts, delves beneath the new media hype to uncover the important cultural transformations that are taking place as media converge. He takes us into the secret world of Survivor Spoilers, where avid internet users pool their knowledge to unearth the show's secrets before they are revealed on the air. He introduces us to young Harry Potter fans who are writing their own Hogwarts tales while executives at Warner Brothers struggle for control of their franchise. He shows us how The Matrix has pushed transmedia storytelling to new levels, creating a fictional world where consumers track down bits of the story across multiple media channels.Jenkins argues that struggles over convergence will redefine the face of American popular culture. Industry leaders see opportunities to direct content across many channels to increase revenue and broaden markets. At the same time, consumers envision a liberated public sphere, free of network controls, in a decentralized media environment. Sometimes corporate and grassroots efforts reinforce each other, creating closer, more rewarding relations between media producers and consumers. Sometimes these two forces are at war. Jenkins provides a riveting introduction to the world where every story gets told and every brand gets sold across multiple media platforms. He explains the cultural shift that is occurring as consumers fight for control across disparate channels, changing the way we do business, elect our leaders, and educate our children. Good.
